Woodlawn was the home of Nelly Custis Lewis, the adopted granddaughter of George and Martha Washington, and it stands a short distance from Mount Vernon in Virginia. Its Federal-style brick mansion was built in the early 1800s on land carved from the Washington estate, and it became a family seat for Nelly and her husband, Lawrence Lewis. This 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced many views of American places for travel sales in the years before 1915. The record also tags the site under Fort Belvoir, a reminder of how the surrounding land changed over the twentieth century.
