The parlor at Mount Vernon, George Washington's Virginia estate on the Potomac, is the room this view puts in front of us, and the record makes clear it is a copy of a Detroit Publishing Company print, made from a glass negative. The estate was Washington's home from 1754 until his death in 1799, and it became a preservation project in 1858 when the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association acquired it, a effort that drew wide public attention. Photographs like this one, taken between roughly 1910 and 1930, helped Americans picture the rooms where Washington lived and entertained, at a time when the house was becoming a national shrine.
