Here the Cowardly Lion weeps openly, and the title's scolding line makes the moment a comic rebuke. The picture is from W. W. Denslow's color illustrations for L. Frank Baum's *The Wonderful Wizard of Oz*, published in Chicago and New York by G. M. Hill in 1900. Denslow's bold, flat color helped make the book a landmark of American children's publishing. Its pairing of a fearful beast with a plainspoken lesson about courage explains why the story and its pictures have stayed so widely loved.
