Most tobacco labels of the 1870s promoted a brand through a single bold image, but this one takes its name and theme from Shakespeare's tragedy. It was issued by James Moran & Co. for its "Romeo" fine cut chewing tobacco and printed in color by C. Hamilton & Co. of St. Louis around 1874. Tobacco firms of the period registered their labels for copyright, which is why the record notes a federal filing. The subject tags point to the love story of Romeo and Juliet, a choice that tied an everyday consumer product to a famous play. The label was later shown in the Library of Congress's 2007 Shakespeare exhibition.
