A brand of fine cut chewing tobacco called Juliet gives this color lithograph its particular twist, turning a Shakespearean heroine into a commercial label. The print was issued for James Moran & Co. of St. Louis and produced by the New York firm Averell & Peckett around 1873, and the company registered its copyright to protect the design from copying. Tobacco labels of the 1870s were among the most colorful printed goods of their day, as manufacturers competed for attention on crowded shop shelves. Romeo and Juliet, a widely performed play, gave the name an instant recognition that needed no explanation.
