This poster advertises a Federal theater Project production of *R.U.R.*, Karel Čapek's 1920 Czech play that gave the word "robot" to the English language. Staged by the Marionette theater under director Remo Bufano, a well-known New York puppeteer, the production reflected the Works Progress Administration's support for live theater during the Depression. The silkscreen process was central to the WPA poster program, which turned out posters for public performances across the country. A January 1939 date stamp on the back suggests it was printed or circulated near the end of the Federal theater Project's run.
