Thomas W. Keene is the actor named in this poster, shown in the title role of Shakespeare's Richard III, a part he was known for in the late nineteenth century. Keene built a reputation as a serious tragedian who toured widely across the United States, and his productions of Shakespeare drew large audiences in towns that rarely saw major stage companies. Posters like this one were printed in bold type and bright colors to sell seats, so the lettering and the star's name were meant to be read from across a street. Look closely at the layout to see how the printer balanced the actor's billing with the play's title.
