Two classical subjects share this poster: the abduction of Polyxena, a daughter of Priam drawn from the Trojan cycle, and a youth of Bacchus, the god of wine. Both were staged as "living statuary," a popular late nineteenth-century entertainment in which performers held motionless poses modeled on famous marble groups, often under colored light and with music. Such bills advertised the spectacle as both art and respectable amusement, appealing to audiences who knew the sculptures from museums and engravings. Notice how the lettering and layout promote the living figures as if they were the statues themselves.
