Living statues were a popular form of tableau entertainment in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when performers posed motionless in costume to recreate famous sculptures and paintings before audiences. Here the subject is the Three Graces, the classical trio of sisters from Greek myth usually shown embracing, a motif that Raphael and many later artists returned to. Posed live rather than carved in marble, the figures let audiences see a familiar masterpiece come to life on stage. The poster's theatrical billing reflects how such shows drew crowds by mixing high art with the glamour of the variety stage.
