Eight women posing as living statues on a revolving pedestal set this poster apart from the many circus bills of the 1890s. The Adam Forepaugh and Sells Brothers show, formed when two rival tent companies combined, presented these tableaux as faithful copies of famous marble groups and paintings. That claim spoke to a period when audiences prized art and culture, even under canvas. The chromolithograph was printed by the Strobridge Lithographing Company, a Cincinnati firm known for circus posters. Its lofty promises to "elevate, educate and entrance" show how circuses sought to present themselves as respectable family entertainment.
