Its sitter is identified in the record as Junius Brutus Booth, the English-born tragedian who settled in America in 1821 and became one of its best-known Shakespearean actors, though an 1899 Scribner's Magazine listing also offers Edwin Forrest as a possibility. This half-length plate, in gold-toned daguerreotype, shows the sitter in theatrical costume, turned three-quarters to the left. It was produced in Mathew Brady's studio at some point between 1844 and 1852, and Booth's death in 1852 places it near the end of his career.
