Edwin Booth, one of the most celebrated tragic actors of the nineteenth century, is shown here in the title role of Hamlet, the part he played for more than a hundred consecutive nights in New York in 1864 and became famous for across the country. This color lithograph dates from about 1873, a decade after that landmark run, and reflects how theatrical portraiture of the era used the star's image to sell both the production and the actor's reputation. Booth was the son of the English actor Junius Brutus Booth, and his Hamlet was widely admired for its introspective, subtle interpretation. The print is preserved in the Library of Congress's pictorial collections.
