Where are you going my pretty maid?" is the opening line of a traditional English nursery rhyme, so the title would have been familiar to audiences even before they reached the theater. The poster advertises a Keith's house, part of the B.F. Keith circuit that grew out of Boston and became one of the most prominent vaudeville chains in the United States. Keith's was known for a clean, family-friendly policy, and its bills mixed comedians, singers, acrobats and novelty acts. Posters like this one were pasted on street boards and in lobbies to announce the week's program, so their large lettering and bold color were meant to be read quickly from a busy sidewalk.
