Two of the era's best-known political figures share this photograph: William McKinley, then serving his second term as president, and Theodore Roosevelt, who had been elected governor of New York in 1898 and was soon to become McKinley's running mate. The pair stand together on a porch step, a casual setting that contrasts with the formal portraits of the period. The record gives no location, but the image dates to around 1900, the year the two ran for reelection and won. Their partnership ended abruptly in September 1901, when McKinley was shot and died, and Roosevelt succeeded him as president.
