Unlike the small inserts most collectors picture, this Old Judge card is mounted in cabinet-card format, the larger studio size popular in the 1880s. Goodwin & Company, a New York tobacco firm, issued it in 1888 and 1889 as a premium packed with its cigarettes, and the N173 number comes from later card catalogues. Albumen prints, made by coating paper with egg white and silver salts, gave such portraits their fine tonal detail. The Library holds this copy in the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection.
