Goodwin & Company, the New York tobacco firm behind Old Judge cigarettes, issued this cabinet-format card in 1888 or 1889, well before the company's ads and inserts became standard parts of the cigarette trade. Unlike the small cards tucked into cigarette packs, this version was mounted on a larger cabinet card, a format that was common for studio portraits of the period and gave baseball players a more formal, photographic presentation. The card comes from the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection, a group of 19th-century baseball cards kept by the Library of Congress, and it shows how tobacco makers used baseball imagery to sell their products to a growing sporting audience.
