Unlike the small pocket-size cards many collectors picture, this 1911 Turkey Red cabinet is a larger chromolithograph, printed from several color stones and finished by hand. The series takes its name from the deep red of its backgrounds, a tone associated with Turkey red dye, and the American Tobacco Company included such cards with its cigarettes to promote its brands and win repeat buyers. Chromolithography was then one of the most advanced ways to reproduce color illustrations in quantity, and the hand-coloring gives each example individual touches worth studying up close. The card is part of the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection of baseball cards.
