Few baseball cards of this era were as large as the Turkey Red cabinets, and this 1911 example from the American Tobacco Company's T3 series shows why collectors later called them "cabinets." Each one is a chromolithograph, a process that built up color from several printing stones, with hand coloring added on top to sharpen the details. The cards were packaged with a cigarette brand, and their size and stiff stock made them more like parlor display pieces than the small inserts that came with most tobacco products. This example belongs to the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection of baseball cards at the Library of Congress.
