Its larger cabinet format and deep red ground set this card apart from the smaller cigarette inserts of the period, and the name "Turkey Red" refers to that striking color. The American Tobacco Company issued the set in 1911 to promote its tobacco products, and each card pairs a player portrait with a colorful lithographed border. Chromolithography allowed the printers to build rich color in layers, and the hand-coloring added in finishing gives each impression its own warmth. The card is part of the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection of baseball cards at the Library of Congress, where it documents early advertising and the baseball culture of the 1910s.
