Larger than the pocket-size tobacco cards most collectors know, this Turkey Red cabinet card is a chromolithograph that was colored by hand over its printed base. The American Tobacco Company issued the series around 1911, and cards like this one were packed with its cigarettes as an incentive to collect. This example comes from the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection and shows how early commercial color printing and baseball imagery were combined to promote tobacco products.
