Issued by Goodwin & Company, the New York tobacco firm, this Old Judge card belongs to the N173 series that collectors catalog from the late 1880s. Its albumen print is mounted on a cabinet card, a larger and sturdier format than the small inserts most people associate with these tobacco issues, and its studio-portrait look reflects photography of the period. Companies like Goodwin tucked such cards into cigarette packs to encourage repeat purchases and collecting, which is one reason so many have survived. The card is part of the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection, and Library staff devised its title because the original record gave no name for the player pictured.
