The title places this hiking poster in District no. 2, a regional unit of the Works Progress Administration's recreation program in Illinois. The silkscreen was printed in 1936, when federal arts workers were producing posters to publicize public programs across the country. Recreation projects of the period gave unemployed Americans paid work leading outings and organizing activities, and the flat, bright color typical of WPA silkscreens made even a simple invitation to hike read as an event worth joining. The date stamped on the back, April 1939, records a later point in the sheet's life.
