Nothing in the record identifies the guests or the house where this New Year's reception took place. The firm was a Washington, D.C., commercial studio that photographed the city's social and public life in the early twentieth century, and this glass negative, a gift of Herbert A. French in 1947, dates from somewhere between 1909 and 1932. Glass plates of this kind were the common working medium of the period, and the streaks and blemishes on the surface come from the natural breakdown of the original coating.
