Dated January 1, 1924, this glass negative shows a New Year reception. The title comes from a note the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve and has not been independently verified. New Year's Day calls and receptions were a long-standing social custom in American cities, and the company, a Washington, D.C. commercial firm, photographed many public and social gatherings during this period. Look for the streaks and blemishes across the plate, which result from natural deterioration of the original coatings rather than from the event itself.
