The record credits this January 1, 1924, New Year reception to Taft, most likely William Howard Taft, who had been president and was then serving as Chief Justice of the United States. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented officials and public events in the early twentieth century, made the glass negative. Its title comes from data written on the negative sleeve and has not been independently verified. The streaks and blemishes visible on the glass come from deterioration of the original coatings, not from the scene itself.
