A New Year reception associated with V.P. Curtis is the subject of this 4 by 5 inch glass negative, though the title comes from information the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve and has not been independently verified. The company operated in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, recording social occasions and city life, and New Year's Day calls and receptions were a long-standing custom among residents and visitors. Glass negatives like this one were the standard working medium of the period, and the streaks and blemishes that may appear on the surface come from the gradual deterioration of the original emulsion coatings.
