Three members of Herbert Hoover's cabinet appear here with their wives: Robert P. Lamont at Commerce, Ray Lyman Wilbur at the Interior, and Charles Francis Adams III at the Navy. Cabinet officers and their spouses were expected at formal New Year receptions in this period, so the picture records a routine but public piece of official social life. The glass negative, made by the National Photo Company, shows the streaks and blemishes that come with aging emulsion, though the figures remain clear. The collection's negatives date from 1909 to 1932, and the men pictured served together from 1929.
