This color print shows a military airplane on a tarmac as the sun goes down, with the low evening light softening the aircraft's outline and the ground. The record catalogs it among American fighter planes of the 1940s, and its date of roughly 1945 to 1947 places it just after World War II, when many wartime fighters were being flown back, stored, or retired. Color prints from this period were still uncommon, since dye coupler processes were only beginning to spread into everyday photography. The Air Force did not become an independent service until 1947, so this image captures aviation during a period of transition.
