This drawing is a student's exercise in military engineering: a plan, section, and elevation of half a fortification front, with its dry ditches laid out on level ground. It was drawn under the direction of Dennis Hart Mahan, the professor of engineering at the United States Military Academy at West Point, and the draftsman, Orlando M. Poe, was a cadet. Mahan's courses taught generations of officers how to design earthen and masonry defenses using the bastion systems of earlier European engineers, and Poe later served as an engineer in the Civil War. The ink and watercolor sheet shows the lessons of the classroom in precise, hand-drawn form.
