Two of the Navy's newest steel warships, the cruisers New York and Brooklyn, share this chromolithograph, which the Werner Company of Akron, Ohio, produced around 1898. The print appeared during the Spanish-American War, when both ships were among the Navy's most powerful vessels and both took part in the fighting off Santiago de Cuba that summer. Color lithographs like this one were widely sold to households and schools, so they show how the public pictured the fleet at the time. The copyright notice on the print indicates that the Werner Company registered it for protection under U.S. copyright law.
