This lithograph asks Oregon men to answer a specific call: the Navy wanted 1,000 men between 16 and 35 for what it called the first line of defense, and the poster directs them to the Dekum Building in Portland. Printed in 1917, shortly after the United States entered the First World War that spring, it relies on blunt text rather than elaborate artwork, with only a small American flag for decoration. The closing line, "Your country needs you," echoes the phrasing that would soon become familiar through the Uncle Sam poster. The Wells Fargo & Co. Express name on the sheet is a reminder that private firms often lent their names to wartime appeals.
