Two frigates meet in this color halftone, the USS *United States* and the British HMS *Macedonian*, in the naval action of October 25, 1812, off the Madeira Islands. Commanded by Stephen Decatur, the American ship overpowered the British frigate and brought her back to port as a prize, a rare result in a war where the Royal Navy had usually prevailed at sea. The painting's source is a work by Charles Robert Patterson, and the reproduction lets viewers compare the rigging, sails, and hulls of two frigates that were among the most admired warships of their day.
