Few wartime-era scenes of this kind survive in color, and this one shows rows of American fighter planes lined up on a tarmac. Taken between 1945 and 1947, it captures the period just after the Second World War, when the United States had built an enormous fleet and was now deciding what to keep, store, or scrap. Dye coupler prints were a newer color process in the 1940s, so the image also shows how photographers were beginning to record military subjects in full color.
