Among the most widely flown training aircraft of the Second World War, the Consolidated Vultee Valiant appears here as a basic trainer for the Army, Navy and Marine Corps. Built by Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation, formed in 1943 from the merger of Consolidated and Vultee, this all-metal monoplane was the step students flew after primary training and before advanced fighters or bombers. Its nickname, the "Vibrator," reflected the constant buzzing of its airframe, which trainees came to know well. This color halftone, dated about 1944, reflects the wartime push to graduate large numbers of pilots quickly.
