The Consolidated Vultee Liberator shown here was a heavy bomber that served both the Army Air Forces and the Navy, which is why the caption names both branches. Designed by Consolidated Aircraft and built in large numbers after the company merged with Vultee in 1943, the Liberator was produced in more than 18,000 examples, more than any other American combat aircraft of its era. Its long range allowed it to hit targets across Europe and the Pacific and to fly anti-submarine patrols over the Atlantic. This color halftone, dated about 1944, is typical of the industrial and wartime publicity material that promoted such aircraft to the public.
