Few American streets carried as much ceremonial weight as Pennsylvania Avenue, and this stereograph looks along it from the Treasury Department, the building that anchored the avenue's western end near the White House. Its two slightly offset images were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which fused them into a single scene with apparent depth. Stereo cards like this one were a popular parlor entertainment in the late nineteenth century, bringing views of cities, monuments and street life into American homes. The 1890 date and the attribution to J.F. Jarvis come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
