Presented under the title "The Liberator of Ireland," this print honors Daniel O'Connell, the lawyer and politician whose nickname reflected his role in winning Catholic Emancipation in 1829, which allowed Catholics to sit in Parliament. He later campaigned for repeal of the Act of Union of 1800. He died in Genoa in 1847, and his reputation remained strong among Irish Catholics and emigrant communities, including in the United States. The copyright deposit suggests the image was made for American viewers around 1873, more than two decades after his death.
