Oscar Wilde poses in a studio portrait by Napoleon Sarony, the New York photographer known for his celebrity sittings in the 1880s. The picture dates to about 1882, the year Wilde toured the United States and Canada lecturing on aesthetic ideas, a trip that drew large crowds and heavy press coverage. The albumen print on a card mount reflects the format of the period, when studio portraits were collected and exchanged much like calling cards. The record also notes a copyright held by Sarony, a sign of how carefully photographers guarded their studio work.
