Few pictures on this board present scripture reading as a domestic act, and this hand-colored lithograph, published by Nathaniel Currier in New York, does so under the plain title *Reading the Scriptures*. Currier issued his prints from the 1830s, and the firm's output in the decades before his partnership with James Ives in 1857 included many sentimental scenes of family and faith meant for middle-class parlors. Hand-coloring was usually done by workers who applied color by stencil or by hand, so two impressions of the same print can differ noticeably in tone. The catalog number refers to the standard Gale Research listing of Currier & Ives work.
