Edwin Forbes's etching "Fall in for soup" shows Union soldiers lining up for their rations, a small, everyday moment that the book's larger scenes of marching and battle often pass over. Forbes sketched the war from the field as a young artist with the Union army, and he later worked those drawings into the etchings published as *Life Studies of the Great Army* in 1876, the date given on this record. The record's date and details come from an older caption card that has since been revised, so the print's exact dating should be read with that in mind. Its focus on routine camp life is what makes it useful to historians of the Civil War.
