The only identifying word in this record is the title "Straccian," which the Library of Congress notes was taken from unverified Bain News Service data on the negative or its caption card, so it may be a place, a person, or a misspelling. The plate is a glass negative no larger than 5 by 7 inches, one of many that George Grantham Bain's New York agency produced for newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century. Bain's photographers covered street scenes, public events, and notable people, and their plates now give a useful record of daily life in that period. Without a verified date or subject, the image is best read as a typical example of the agency's working output.
