This glass negative shows Count Johann Heinrich von Bernstorff and his wife, identified by the Bain News Service caption cards, though the title itself is unverified. Bernstorff served as Germany's ambassador to the United States from 1908 until relations were broken in early 1917, a period that ended with his departure from Washington. His 1919 portrait comes from the years when he was rebuilding a public career in postwar Germany. The Bain News Service, run by George Grantham Bain in New York, supplied newspapers with news and portrait photographs, and its glass negatives document many public figures of the period.
