Sir Auckland Geddes and his wife are pictured together here, and the title names the couple after the British diplomat. Geddes, a former university anatomy professor who led Britain's wartime national service effort, served as British ambassador to the United States from 1920 to 1924, a period when Bain News Service was photographing Washington officials and visitors. The record gives no date, and the title comes from data the news service recorded without verification, so the exact occasion remains unknown. Glass negatives of this kind preserve fine detail in formal portraits from the early twentieth century.
