Sir Eric Drummond served as the first Secretary-General of the League of Nations from 1920 to 1933, making him the League's first head and the one who built its Geneva secretariat from nothing. The record for this glass negative gives his name only, and the title comes from caption cards that the Bain News Service attached to its plates, so the sitting itself is not documented. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency active in the early twentieth century, sold images to newspapers that wanted fast portraits of officials and public figures. Its negatives in the Library of Congress are a useful record of how diplomats and statesmen were presented to the public in that era.
