Bain News Service's caption identifies the sitter as Sir Lancelot Carnegie, though the library notes that this title comes from unverified data on the original negative or caption card. Carnegie was a British diplomat whose career included postings connected to the British embassy in Washington, where he worked during the years before and during the First World War. The Bain agency, a New York news photo service active from about 1900 into the 1920s, supplied newspapers with portraits of officials, diplomats and public figures, so this glass negative offers a glimpse of how Washington's diplomatic corps was presented to the American press in that era. The record gives no date, so the exact occasion is unknown.
