Here the sitter is the flutist George Barrère, pictured with his wife in a glass negative that the Bain News Service recorded without a date. Born in France, Barrère became one of the best-known flutists in New York, playing for years with the New York Symphony and later founding his own Little Symphony. The Bain News Service, a New York press agency active in the early twentieth century, supplied newspapers with portraits of performers, politicians and other public figures, so pictures like this show how musicians were presented to a broad public. The title comes from the agency's caption data, which has not been independently verified, and the wife is not named in the record.
