The title names the tenor Enrico Caruso and his wife, though the record gives no date and the identification comes from caption cards that were never verified. Caruso sang at the Metropolitan Opera in New York for much of the 1900s and 1910s, and his fame made him a frequent subject for news photographers. The Bain News Service, which worked in New York from about 1899 into the early 1930s, supplied pictures of such public figures to newspapers and magazines. Glass negatives like this one were fragile and easily cracked, so a surviving plate is worth noting.
