Enrico Caruso, the Italian tenor, is the subject of this glass negative, one of many portraits the Bain News Service produced of performers and public figures in the early twentieth century. Caruso was among the most famous opera singers of his day, known for his recordings and his long run at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and press photographers of the period often sought out such celebrities for portraits. The record gives no date or photographer, and the title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact occasion is uncertain. George Grantham Bain's agency supplied newspapers with images like this one, and the glass negatives remain a valuable record of how the press pictured stars of the stage.
