Among the Bain negatives, this one pairs newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst with his wife, the only sitter identified in the record. Hearst built one of the largest newspaper empires in the country, anchored by the New York Journal, and he was a frequent subject of public attention in the early twentieth century. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency run by George Grantham Bain, supplied images like this to newspapers and magazines. The record offers no firm date or occasion, so the setting remains uncertain, but the glass negative still shows how the press portrayed prominent figures of its day.
