This glass negative is one of the few Bain News Service portraits that pairs the comic actor Sidney Drew with his wife, which sets it apart from the single-sitter studio portraits on the board. Drew came from a well-known American theatrical family and spent years on the stage before moving into silent film comedy in the 1910s, where he often worked with Gladys Rankin, who was also his wife and a fellow performer. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified caption information, so the sitting should be read as a general portrait from the early film era rather than a documented event. Still, the image is useful for seeing how the couple presented themselves to the press during the period.
